The intrusion of a modern feminist viewpoint in relation to the treatment and role of women may alienate period purists but does not detract from Morgan's well-written, exciting, and action-packed story. Meanwhile, the Campbells and other enemies threaten their future. But both resist this fate for reasons of their own. Killian manages to save Ruarc from immediate execution and returns with him to his manor, where the priest urges them to marry, saying that it is God's will. A stranger intervenes and kills Alexander but is caught by Alexander's vengeful kin and revealed to be Ruarc MacDonald, adding fuel to an existing feud between the Campbell and MacDonald clans. She barely manages to get out of the Campbell ancestral castle when Alexander catches her.
